a walk into 2017

“A run into 2017” is probably a more appropriate title, considering my preferred method of mobility this morning. Happy New Year to all, old readers and new, casual virtual passersby and lovely familiars. We made it to a new string of 365. I’m glad to be here. January hangs at my elbows and as I write a coffee keeps me company in a local Starbucks (yes, between craft shops I also frequent a couple of my favorite locations of this ubiquitous chain). A slow bustle hums into my ears: a thump of instrumentals, a barista calling a name, an older gentleman licking his finger & flipping the ear of a newspaper corner. Tranquil. a little lakeland wander

Lakeland, 28 exits off Interstate 4 headed east – or sooner if you take the toll road. In my initial view, something of a pothole, a nondescript town mentioned on weather forecasts and correlating live cams overlooking Lake Mirror. Admittedly, when I wander Lakeland I don’t step far into shops or restaurants, though I have a few favorites where I have gone and know a few names in addition. Lakeland’s intrigue lies in the mindsets I tend to arrive with, and leave with, whenever I traverse the 45 minutes to get there. I seem to come to some conclusion about my life, whether it’s a simple daily change or an idea that gives me lengthy pause. Continue reading “a little lakeland wander”

Lens | Quick Cosmetology Photoshoot

I’m often surprised at my enjoyment of being photographed. I’m intrigued by the duality of vulnerability and separation: the viewer, the subject, the photographer, all shielded by a physical contraption which helps bare secrets but simultaneously keeps them just hidden enough to abbreviate the story behind the gaze, the background, the reasoning for the picture. mango stir fry + shrimp & sausage

June is arrived and is mangling my desire to travel further than five steps from my front door (if I even make it that far). Though I’ve called Florida home since birth, the soupy summer hangs foremost on my list of “Things I Dread Throughout the Year” and coping with the honey-textured air & intense sunlight is a continual losing battle. I even sweat half of my body fluid out whilst doing yoga on my bedroom floor, wind up slipping out of bakasana and shaking the entire building with my unintentional bodyslam. Welcome to Florida. There’s no escaping the swirling humidity here. Continue reading “mango stir fry + shrimp & sausage”

explorations | san diego pt. 1: downtown

I needed this trip. Just as I’ve needed every single pause in my reality, when friends visit for a day or when I drive out to another city just to purge myself of the parasitic elements of my home region. Nothing like watching the wind blow over the wings of an airplane, and feeling eager to land amongst the lights below, to help reclaim some semblance of joy, even if the purity of the sentiment lasts only a weekend. Beer bread: honey + cheddar

I only recently wrangled up a fondness for beer. The hoppy, malty, fizz-and-pop delight seems to deter many a person my age, and a taste is only acquired after long experimentation and a sort of “aha” moment in which one realizes shit, this is actually not bad. Going to Europe and tasting beer several levels above the watery infraction that is Bud Light helped me acquire a taste for the beverage. A good quality type of anything can change someone’s opinion of a whole, be it drinks, jeans, books, colors, or human beings. Continue reading “Beer bread: honey + cheddar”

coffee break | brown butter eggnog scones

Something about it. About streetlights at night undulating like dancers across my windshield. Radio up, voice raised, rattle and hum of engine, crunch of gravel undertire – the chains are loose and the iron bars split to shards. My hair is wild and my eyes are glittering and my heart is suddenly nocturnal. A stellar case of paradox. Me, a diurnal creature, amicably shaking hands with the stars. I feel like young should feel. I feel like peace should feel. I feel, undoubtedly, how I should feel. Continue reading “coffee break | brown butter eggnog scones”

November supper: white cheddar pumpkin shells + prosciutto + herbed mushroom saute

November crept up and smacked my head from behind. The door to 2015 is fast closing and someone cracked open the window leading to the path of 2016. I’m rather startled by this rapid passing of time, flitting off the ticking clock like dust mites. Who have I been in 2015? A stranger, mostly. Yet, at the same time, a familiar friend. Venturing East for 1 year | Flaky + savory pumpkin rosemary biscuits

One year. 365 days. How odd and delightful. I have a penchant for missing important dates which don’t involve an actual human’s milestone, and I certainly did forget with regards to Venturing East’s first birthday in September. This blog has remained a steady background singer in the soundtrack of my life. As I nourish it with words and pictures, it serves as a sort of Miracle-Gro for my heart. Jumbo Spiced Pumpkin & White Chocolate Yogurt Muffins + Pumpkin Cream Cheese

When I’m quiet on Venturing East, it means my life has been everything but silent. Usually, too, anything but calm. I can chalk up my lack of writing to sheer busyness, but that is a veil tossed over a more tumultuous catalyst.
