Beer bread: honey + cheddar

I only recently wrangled up a fondness for beer. The hoppy, malty, fizz-and-pop delight seems to deter many a person my age, and a taste is only acquired after long experimentation and a sort of “aha” moment in which one realizes shit, this is actually not bad. Going to Europe and tasting beer several levels above the watery infraction that is Bud Light helped me acquire a taste for the beverage. A good quality type of anything can change someone’s opinion of a whole, be it drinks, jeans, books, colors, or human beings. Continue reading “Beer bread: honey + cheddar”

Venturing East for 1 year | Flaky + savory pumpkin rosemary biscuits

One year. 365 days. How odd and delightful. I have a penchant for missing important dates which don’t involve an actual human’s milestone, and I certainly did forget with regards to Venturing East’s first birthday in September. This blog has remained a steady background singer in the soundtrack of my life. As I nourish it with words and pictures, it serves as a sort of Miracle-Gro for my heart. Jumbo Spiced Pumpkin & White Chocolate Yogurt Muffins + Pumpkin Cream Cheese

When I’m quiet on Venturing East, it means my life has been everything but silent. Usually, too, anything but calm. I can chalk up my lack of writing to sheer busyness, but that is a veil tossed over a more tumultuous catalyst. Continue reading “Jumbo Spiced Pumpkin & White Chocolate Yogurt Muffins + Pumpkin Cream Cheese”

Summer Squash & Vine Tomato Galette + Rosemary Pea Pesto

I allude to the future frequently on Venturing East. Perhaps the rambles of then are my way of cementing the future’s presence, and assuring myself that I am approaching one that won’t like a black hole stretch me thin & gulp me behind its stark black fangs. Writing has always been my way of adding permanence to the abstract. Once in word form, a concept or a wish exits dormancy. Words are a knight’s shield and a king’s royal orders.  Continue reading “Summer Squash & Vine Tomato Galette + Rosemary Pea Pesto”

Fluffy Buttermilk Sweet Potato Loaf

Storms, Mother Nature’s premier musketeer, are a part of life, like bread and bugs and the hanging stench of trash outside a dumpster. To take it a step further, I’d argue that the storm is life itself. Your life is your Storm.

Prep + Poetry | Quick & Sweet Rum Butter Pecan Egg Tartlets

I am hardly a poet. I am too clumsy with rhyme schemes and too impatient for iambic pentameter. Baking is a poetry I’m okay with pursuing. I can mess up. I can crisp everything black and watch it crumble beneath my fork into wispy ashes. Words, I do not like to burn. Poetry is one thing I leave to the masters. Cheddar Chive Foccacia

Warm, cheesy bread is a godsend after a day of errand running & literal running across a parking lot beneath heavy raindrops. Failing, clothes becoming soaked, goosebumps rising like little hills on your arms from the chill of an AC against wet skin. But bread. It cheers the heart. Continue reading “Cheddar Chive Foccacia”

Salted Chocolate Doughnuts & Orange Earl Grey Buttercream

Summer is pulling on its boots and making for the front door. It’s gone quickly. I remember the hours before landing in Florida from Sweden, where the temperature was comfortable at 60 degrees and I dreaded the drench of humidity to come. But upon landing I immediately felt reintegrated. Continue reading “Salted Chocolate Doughnuts & Orange Earl Grey Buttercream”

July 4th Culinary Roundup| Greek Potato Salad + Homemade Butter + Blueberry Buttermilk Banana Bread

Setting the table for Independence Day before I discovered the beauty of the kitchen, its heat, its flavors as many as stars in a cloudless night, was a more boring affair. Hot dogs, charred. Baked beans zapped and poured in a bowl and called a masterpiece. This year, not so. Glazed Lemon-Blueberry Scones

Life’s endless responsibilities pile up like that laundry I’ve neglected in my drier for nearly a week, yet still I manage to sweep aside time to bake – this time, for The Citrus Menu. Continue reading “Glazed Lemon-Blueberry Scones”
